Federal District Court Hears Sanctuary Cities Case

Posted Apr 14, 2017

A hearing was held Friday, April 14, in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California on lawsuits filed by San Francisco and Santa Clara County challenging the Trump administration’s executive order that directed the Attorney General and the Secretary to ensure that sanctuary jurisdictions “are not eligible to receive Federal grants, except as deemed necessary for law enforcement purposes by the Attorney General of the Secretary”.   San Francisco and Santa Clara County have requested that that the order be blocked nationally, arguing that it unconstitutionally infringes on the authority of states and local governments.  Due to the level of public interest in these cases, the court has created a website, Sanctuary Jurisdiction Cases to post pertinent news and case information. See this CRS Report, Sanctuary Jurisdictions and Select Federal Grant Funding Issues: In Brief .  Read articles in the Los Angeles Times and SFgate.
