UC Davis Student-Athlete Career Night Panel

Posted By Kevin R. Johnson, Apr 11, 2013

I participated on a panel discussion on careers in law for UC Davis Student-Athlete Career Night 2013 last night. My panel included Jamey Wright, UC Davis Water Polo coach and UC Davis law alum from the class of 1984. Jamey knew Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and State Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, who were both in his class. There were about 15 or so student athletes in attendance asking about legal careers, law school applications, etc. Jake Jondle, Class of 2013, also was on the panel. He played football for UC Davis and talked about law school. Jake has a job upon graduation with the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Basketball assistant coach Des Abeyta drove me and some of the panelists from the parking structure to the event. I was able to tell her that my daughter Teresa was a ballgirl for the women's basketball team when Abeyta was a star post player!

There were many other career panels that night.

On another note, this boxing fan saw a student with a Wild Card Boxing Club t-shirt and he told me that he sparred there. It is a famous gym and is where Manny Pacquiao trains. The student -- I did not catch his name -- sparred with a world class fighter from the UK, Amir Khan!
