Receptions Recap from San Francisco and Sacramento

Posted By Kevin R. Johnson, Jul 16, 2010

Every year around this time, I look forward to attending events where experienced attorneys and judges gather to welcome students into the practice of law.

On Wednesday, I attended the Latino Partners and Associates Reception organized by the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF).  The reception is a chance for summer associates to meet with Latino partners to network and learn about the Bay Area legal scene.  Held in the grand San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster, Wednesday’s event was an excellent opportunity to catch-up with alumni, students, and friends of King Hall.

Among our students there were Emilio Camacho ’11 and Alexis Alvarez ‘11.  Among our alums there were Anna Gehriger ‘06, Alica Del Valle ‘06, and Stephen Abreu ‘07.

I also spent some time talking to some of the Bay Area’s leading Latino lawyers, including MoFo’s Arturo Gonzalez, Sergio Garcia-Rodriguez (an old friend from my days at Heller Ehrman, now a Partner at Reed Smith), Fred Alvarez (Wilson Sonsini), and Donato Tapia (U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights).  I enjoyed visiting with Justice Maria P. Rivera of the California Court of Appeal for the 1st District, a friend of King Hall who was a panelist at the screening of the Cruz Reynoso documentary at the Crest Theatre.  Another friend of King Hall, Jose Padilla, was also in attendance at the reception.  Jose is the head of California Rural Legal Assistance and has said on many occasions that UC Davis School of Law is “the CRLA law school” because so many of our alums work for CRLA.  It is gratifying to see that King Hall’s alumni and students have such an excellent reputation in the legal community!

On Thursday, it was on to Sacramento and the Barristers' Summer Associates Reception, which honors summer associates and firms participating in the Sacramento County Bar Association's Diversity fellowship Program.  King Hall’s Diversity fellows are Alana Penn (Olson, Hagel & Fishburn), E.J. Brown (Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe), Arnulfo Medina (Rediger, McHugh & Owensby), and Parissa Ebrahimzadeh (Stoel Rives).

Many alums were there: Alumni Board member Michael Mills ‘97, Judge Larry Brown ’89, Brendan Begley ‘98, Kevin Davis ’07, Emmanuel Salazar ’05, and Dan Stouder ’03.  I talked with Judge John Mendez, Senior United States District Judge, Eastern District of California.  Judge Mendez is a longtime friend of King Hall who administered the oath at last year’s swearing-in ceremony.

Also at the event were current students Noelle Fritz, Alexandria Goff, Jihan Kahssay, Justine Lescroart, Courtney O’Brien, Jon diCristina, Remy Goldsmith, Jennifer Tamura, Emilio Camacho, Stephanie Alford, Richard Nguyen, Jamie Okh, Lila Disque, and many more!

UC Davis was very well represented at both events!  It was great seeing everyone!
