New Year's Message and Commencement Speaker Announcement

Posted By Kevin R. Johnson, Jan 11, 2016

Dear King Hall Community:

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to King Hall.  I hope that the holidays were a joyful and relaxing time for you.

Our Spring semester is always filled with exciting events.  This year is no different.

On March 10, we will have a 50th Anniversary “Celebrating King Hall” event. This year’s celebration will feature a keynote speech by Chief Justice of California Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye '84.  The 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award winner also will be honored that evening.

Commencement for the Class of 2016 is on May 14. We are proud to announce that the 2016 commencement speaker will be Congressman John Lewis, a true icon of the Civil Rights movement and close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here are just a few other dates to remember:

  • January 29: Law Review Symposium on state efforts to legalize marijuana.
  • February 4: Edward L. Barrett, Jr., Lecture on Constitutional Law with Professor Heather Gerken (Yale Law School).   She will discuss the Supreme Court’s controversial  Citizens United decision.
  • February 4-5: “Gaming Metrics: Innovation & Surveillance in Academic Misconduct,” organized by King Hall's Center for Science & Innovation Studies (CSIS) and the Innovating Communication in Scholarship (ICIS) project.
  • March 31: Brigitte M. Bodenheimer Lecture on Family Law with UC Berkeley Professor Melissa Murray.  She will discuss “Obergefell v. Hodges and the New Marriage Inequity.”

I hope you will find time to attend and participate in as many of these outstanding events as possible.  I look forward to sharing a productive and exciting Spring semester!
