Justice Cantil-Sakauye Swears in Gov. Brown ‘Without any Mental Reservation… Really!”

Cantil-Sakauye

In one of her first official duties as Chief Justice of California, King Hall alumna Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye ’84 administered the oath of office for Governor Jerry Brown on his inauguration day, January 3.  As he is wont to do, Brown went off script, drawing some laughter from an audience that knew all too well the state of the state the governor will be leading.  Here is the National Public Radio transcript of the exchange:

Governor Brown: "I take this obligation freely."

Justice Cantil-Sakauye: "Without any mental reservation."

Brown: "Without any mental reservation."

(Laughter heard in the audience.)

Cantil-Sakauye: "Or ..."

Brown: "Really! No mental reservation."

(Louder laughs.)
