Professor Evelyn Lewis graciously contributes this Dean's Blog entry about the recent BLSA gathering at her home. Thanks, Professor Lewis -- for the blog entry and for being a wonderful hostess!!
"I have hosted a dinner potluck in her home for many years for the members of the Black Law Students Association. Based on comments from past and present attendees it is usually a great event and this year was no exception. This annual event provides a valuable opportunity to welcome new BLSA first-year students, to help them connect with each other and 2Ls and 3Ls better. It is also an opportunity for invited faculty and staff to get to know and talk to the BLSA students one-on-one.
This year's event, held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, took place in the yard of my home on a spectacular balmy Davis evening (fortunately standard in Davis in October). Members of the Black Law Students Association came out en masse and brought absolutely delicious potluck contributions to add to the entree and salad that I typically provide as a foundation. The excellence and abundance of food was only surpassed by the excellence and abundance of the conviviality enjoyed between BLSA students and numerous faculty and staff who attended in support of them. Faculty and staff in attendance included Dean Kevin Johnson, Associate Dean Vik Amar, Robyn Reid, Angela Harris, Gabriel Chin, Leslie Kurtz, Miguel Mendez, Clay Tanaka, Craig Compton, Leslie Kurtz, Margaret Johns, Leticia Saucedo, Lisa Ikemoto, Rose Villazor, Christopher Ide-Don, William Wiecek, and Peter Lee. Attendees also included African American alum Ron Gordon '73, several spouses and partners of students and faculty and even an African American undergraduate who is considering law school.
It was a warm and wonderful evening!"
