First Amendment and Protests by Professional Athletes

The Black Law Students Association organized a discussion on the First Amendment issues raised by protests by professional athletes. Professor Aaron Tang, a constitutional law scholar and self-identified Cleveland Browns football fan, offered insights about the freedom of expression issues raised in the history of professional athletes’ political protest from professional boxing legend Muhammad Ali to NFL quarterback Colin Kapernick. Professor Tang also recognized the issues of race in the contemporary controversy.
