Distinguished Visitors from Sri Lanka

In April, UC Davis School of Law had an extremely distinguished group of justices and judges from Sri Lanka visit and learn about American law from our amazing faculty. This week, another group of judges and justices – including a Sri Lankan Supreme Court justice and two appellate court justices – visited UC Davis.
I met with the group in the morning and talked about the relationship between the political branches of government and the courts in the United States. The judges were extremely interested in the impact of the new president on the nation as a whole. We also talked about an important issue in both the United States and Sri Lanka – managing the heavy caseload that each judge has.
Cruz Reynoso, Professor Emeritus and retired Justice of the California Supreme Court, had dinner with the distinguished group on the first day of their visit. Senior Associate Dean Madhavi Sunder joined the group for lunch and talked about intellectual property issues. I also talked with the judges over sandwiches.
One interesting topic came up – our Sri Lankan friends had an interest in law students possibly serving as externs in their chambers. We will follow up on what would be an amazing opportunity for our students.
