Confirmation of California Supreme Court Nominee Tino Cuellar

Posted By Kevin R. Johnson, Aug 28, 2014

I had the honor today of attending the confirmation hearing in San Francisco of Stanford Law Professor Mariano-Florentino Cuellar to the California Supreme Court.

Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84, presided over the hearing in which Attorney General Kamala Harris and Court of Appeals Justice Joan Dempsey also participated. As you can see, I had a good seat at the hearing!

Nominee Tino Cuellar addresses California Attorney General Kamala Harris and Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84.

I have known Tino for years and served with him on the immigration policy group of Senator Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. It was nice talking with him and his wife, federal judge Lucy Koh, before the hearing. Professors Cruz Reynoso and Anupam Chander were at the hearings, too. Almost all of the Justices were there. King Hall alum Bijal Vakil '96 was there and talked with me.  The witnesses were unanimous in the opinion that Tino Cuellar would be an outstanding Justice. The panel unanimously approved his nomination!
