An International Day

I had an international day yesterday. Professor Walter Leal (Entomology) arranged a lunch with two distinguished visitors from Brazil. Dr. Carlos Brito was on campus to deliver the Provost’s Forum. Ambassador Eduardo Prisco, who is based in San Francisco, was also at lunch. Interim Dean of Ag Mary Delany was in attendance, as well. We had a great discussion of agriculture, UC Davis, immigration reform, and the vibrant Brazilian economy.
In the evening, I attended a reception in honor of Consul Alejandro Celorio at the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento. Alejandro is off to Washington, D.C. Our Immigration Law Clinic has worked closely with him and the Consulate to help Mexican nationals with their immigration problems. He also has worked with me on an agreement to ensure that Consul officials can participate in the law school's international programs. I presented Alejandro with a certificate and spoke about his great work with UC Davis. Immigration Law Clinic Director Amagda Pérez, on behalf of the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF), presented Consul Celorio with a “thank you” print. Ambassador Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez was the emcee of the event. Amagda, Professor Leticia Saucedo, International Programs Director Beth Greenwood, law student Fabiola Larios, alumna Mary Waltermire '95, and others were in attendance. It was an honor to participate and send-off Alejandro to Washington with good wishes from UC Davis.
