Student advocates shine in Neumiller Memorial Moot Court Competition

Last week saw another signature UC Davis School of Law event: the Annual Irving L. Neumiller Memorial Moot Court Competition. This year marked the 52nd competition, which is generously sponsored by the Neumiller & Beardslee law firm.

Part of our nationally recognized skills program, the Neumiller Competition is an excellent opportunity to learn more about King Hall’s Moot Court Program, the Moot Court Honors Board, and appellate advocacy in general. It is also a chance to watch four of King Hall’s best oral advocates have their skills tested by three distinguished judges.

This year, the best of the best included Caroline Perris '22 (one of my research assistants last summer), Abby Miles '22, Vannalee Cayabyab '22, and Lauren Murvihill '22. The advocates were truly extraordinary and made the King Hall community proud.

The Moot Court Board arranged for a superstar group of judges:

  • The Honorable Justice Elena Duarte of the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District
  • The Honorable Presiding Judge Daniel P. Maguire of Yolo Superior Court
  • The Honorable Judge Todd Irby of Placer Superior Court.

They asked hard but fair questions. Well-prepared and smooth as silk, the student advocates responded elegantly and persuasively to the questions.
