Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84 Delivers State of the Judiciary Address

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84 delivered her first State of the Judiciary address to a joint session of the California Legislature on March 19.  The speech drew coverage from media across the state, including the San Jose Mercury News, Southern California Public Radio station KPCC, and The Recorder.

The Chief Justice warned lawmakers of "worrisome and potentially dangerous delays in the resolution of cases" that may occur as a result of $650 million in budget cuts in the state's judicial branch that have led to closed courtroom and clerk's offices as wells as staff layoffs and reduced hours at a time when courts are struggling with increased caseloads.  She also spoke on the continued need for the Judicial Council of California to provide state-level planning for the court system, and referenced her personal history as a Sacramento-area native.
